The traditional "brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) hypothesis of depression" proposes that impairment of the BDNF signaling pathway in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex participates in the pathophysiology of depression, and antidepressants act by recovering/enhancing BDNF signal transduction.
